Periodic inter communal violence has afflicted and created deep fractures within South Sudan due to the lack of authority and divisive political power. Peace envoys, conferences and initiatives seem to be the only defining tool in arresting situations and quelling the demands of the people.
Peace, an element for harmony and restoration has eluded the communities of Lakes state, specifically in Rumbek.
Last week, a peace conference in Rumbek center commenced; The Kuei and Ruop Intellectual Gabal Forum was engineered to address the ongoing violent feuds over resources(land and cattle) underpinned by perpetual revenge killings that have resulted in immense human loss, starving the state off stability.
The week long event included major stakeholders; Agaar women groups association, youth and the elders have spearheaded talks within and between Roup and Pakam communities inclusive of Rumbek Center, Malek payam, Rumbek North and East.
All participants had a chance to voice their concerns in the hope to gain a comprehensive census for ending the violent upheaval and promote a tangible peace accord that is recognized by all.
This peace Initiative consequently took place after the success of the weaponry disarmament that removed thousands of rifles off civilian hands by the incumbent Governor.
Cementing such a task requires an holistic approach from the security apparatus, government institutions and traditional community leaders. The socio-economic issues along with the proliferation of arms, lack of rule of law are all components of instability embedded into the ongoing peace dialogue.
